Here is a great project, I always enjoyed the sound of a Lap Steel so I thouhgt I would try and build one !! The great thing is that CBGITTY sells a 2×4 Lap Steel Guitar Kit.
The kit comes with everything you need to build a Lap Steel, the only thing you need to supply is the 2×4!!
Kit includes:
- Full instructions printed on a 12×18 poster – suitable for framing
- Two floating bridges
- Humbucking Pickup
- Guitar jack and jackplate
- Six open-gear guitar tuners (3 left, 3 right)
- Twelve string ferrules
Two packs of strings: one for blues and one for Country/Hawaiian C6 tuning.
The picture shown is the one I built using this kit, I started with a 32″ Select grade 2×4 which I left natural and sealed with shellac. My Lap Steel is tuned to OPEN G which is
D-G-D-G-B-D from the low to high strings
I drew fret lines with a pencil, the fret markers are some gear beads I purchased from Micheals Craft store.
I used 4- 5/32 metal screws to help hold/direct strings to the tuning pegs.
The build is super easy, the instructions are great , with awesome diagrams that require minimal tools and is a blast to build. You can make it real simple or you can go all out and customize anyway you want.
CBGITTY also sells a variety of other parts to customize your lap steel.
